Aadhaar is India’s version of Canada’s social security number or the American social security card. India’s Aadhaar card is a 12-digit unique identification number. Aadhaar numbers are issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on behalf of the Government of India.
Adhaar Cards will ultimately serve as a proof of identity and address, across India. In future the will also help to link to other government schemes and subsidies.
Who can apply for Aadhaar Card
Any person, irrespective of age and gender, who is a citizen of India and satisfies the verification process specified by the Unique Identification Authority of India can apply for Aadhaar card. PIOs, NRIs as well as foreigners who are living in India can apply for Aadhaar card, and it is rendered free of cost to all candidates.
Can foreigners apply for Aadhaar Card
It does not matter whether you are foreign national or an NRI, if you have stayed in India for more than 182 days, you will be eligible to apply for Adhaar. i.e. Any foreign citizen residing in India can apply for Aadhaar.
Aadhaar card is meant for establishing the unique identity of residents of India. It has nothing to do with person citizenship nor can Adhaar card be used as identity proof of Indian citizenship.
How to apply for Aadhaar Card
There are authorized Discover the nearest Adhaar enrollment centers all across India, find the center near your location. Go to the enrollment center with identity proof and address proof to apply.
1.Visit the nearest enrollment center. Fill application and give the required documents (mentioned in the list below).
2.Your Application details are then entered into the system database.
3.Your fingerprints are taken, a digital photograph and Iris capture done.
4.Once all the documents verified, Aadhaar number is issued.
The time frame is assumed to be about 60 – 90 days from completing the above formalities, however, expect to wait for three-plus months.

Check Status of Aadhaar Card
You will require your enrolment number, date and time given by Unique Identification Authority of India at the time of registration to check the status of your adhaar card online. Both date and time fields are required.
